Coffee tables are usually a fairly straightforward affair; four legs, perhaps a pedestal base, and the choice of a round or rectangular top. With the advent of new technologies and after years of strange sightings, the art of furniture making has expanded dramatically and we now have to deal with the reality---“our furniture is not alone.” With three legs and an atypical top inscribed with what appears to be a repeated symbol or message, a UFO has landed!
Created with the aid of a WaterJet, this project tests the machines limits and precision as well as the material strength of .25” steel plate. Designed with only .25” spacing between cuts to create the illusion of one continuous cut, what was once an exceptionally strong and fixed piece of steel, became fairly weak. In an effort to reinforce the table, 2.5” strips of steel plate were welded beneath the table at the .25” spacing and hand bent around the edges and legs for added dimension and strength. From this process emerged a futuristic table, which displays a harmonious blend of digital fabrication technology and traditional handcraft.
